Working together to save Gloucestershire's hedgehogs
Gloucestershire Hedgehog Network is a partnership between Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue, Brockworth Hedgehog Rescue and Vale Wildlife Hospital.
Hedgehogs that are injured always need rescuing. Hedgehogs out in the day can be very unwell too. If you see a hedgehog out in the day,
please call your nearest rescue for advice immediately.
In the meantime, use an old towel or gardening gloves to pick the hedgehog up and put it in a deep plastic box. Put a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, the hedgehog covered with another towel and a shallow dish of water. After an hour, add a shallow bowl of cat food mixed with water to form a soup.
Out of hours, injured or sick hedgehogs and tiny hoglets can be taken to your nearest emergency vet. You should not be charged.
Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue was set up by Jo Bisley, who also founded the Gloucestershire Hedgehog Network. Jo started as a foster carer for another rescue more than 13 years ago before starting Wild Hogs. The rescue has moved to larger premises and Emily Harper is the hospital manager. Emily is doing a PhD in hedgehog conservation along side running the rescue.
Brockworth Hedgehog Rescue was started by Vicki Oliver 9 years ago in her home and garden. During this time Vicki also volunteered at Vale Wildlife Hospital. The rescue has now moved to larger premises to increase its capacity and increase its team of volunteers.
Vale Wildlife Hospital was started by Caroline Gould over 39 years ago and she is still running the rescue. They take a range of wildlife including many hedgehogs and have a veterinary team on site.
